One of the most important aspects of our job is ensuring that the best interests of the children involved are met. Much too often parents use their children as a bargaining tool while going through a divorce, oftentimes without even knowing they are doing it. It is surprising how aware children are and how quickly they pick up on the negative aspects of a divorce.
There is a fine line between involving children in your divorce (which is a negative) and communicating with your child about the changes within the family (which is a positive). If the child is old enough, you may consider talking to the child about their schedule with each parent. For example, if the schedule is interfering with the child's time that he/she would normally do homework, this is an important topic that should be discussed amongst the parents.
If you are going through a contested divorce that involves child custody issues, feel free to contact us to discuss your matter. We look forward to speaking with you.
