When you're going through a divorce, having an excellent divorce team by your side can make all the difference in the outcome of your case. When you hire the right attorney, you can have peace of mind, which is priceless during divorce. To assist you with the selection process, here are four questions to ask when determining if a potential lawyer is the right fit.
1. Will everything be okay?
You're in a vulnerable situation. A good lawyer will reassure you,
but at the same time won't promise that you'll get everything
that you want. The point is to hire a lawyer who will keep your expectations
realistic. On the other hand, if they don't have a confident, positive
attitude, you could end up second guessing every decision that you make.
2. May I meet your staff?
Often, when you're working with a lawyer you'll be working with
their team as well. Staff often help by notifying clients about court
dates and gathering information from them. A good staff is vital to a
great legal team, but you should meet and like them.
3. Do you specialize in family law?
Some lawyers specialize in a specific area of law, while others practice
everything from criminal defense, to estate planning, to
family law. An attorney who handles divorce every day will have more experience than
one who dabbles in it. A lawyer who handles other areas of law may be
a good divorce attorney, but the more someone does something, the better
they get at it.
4. Have you dealt with my spouse's lawyer?
While it may seem like a good idea to hire an attorney who dislikes your
spouse's attorney, this may not be an ideal situation. Good attorneys
know and respect their peers and do their best to reach a settlement with
as little friction as possible. When you have hostile spouses, adding
lawyer hostility to the mix doesn't help.
